Lowlands Festival 2009 – Bravo Stage

Lowlands Festival 2009 – Bravo Stage

August 2009 saw the return of the annual Lowlands Festival at Walibi World, Biddinhuizen in the Netherlands and this year our Hippotizers played an invaluable part in creating an innovative stage concept for some fantastic acts.

This three day alternative event hosts a variety of entertainment ranging from music, film and literature to theatre, visual arts and stand-up comedy. It produces its own unique currency, broadcasts festival radio and publishes a daily newspaper and with a market, global restaurants and bars, various other amenities and around 50,000 dwellers, the area temporarily turns into a town that has frequently been described as ‘Glasto meets Goa’.

One of the biggest festivals in the Netherlands, it is spread over eight stages in three areas of the site (Cape Lowlands, Planet Paradise, Lake Lowlands). This year Dutch production company 250K took on the task to create the stage concept and design in the Bravo tent, where the program included high-profile names such as Boys Noize, 2 Many DJ’s, Joost van Bellen, Klaxons and no other than our own home-grown talent Dizzie Rascal.

In order to create a stage that was equally inviting during the day and in the evening, 250K came up with the idea to arrange 56 cubes on the stage as well as 18 attached to panels in the roof. While the cubes were white and lit out during the day by TenFeet, the evening entertainment had custom-made video content from Eyesupply projected onto the cubes (with soft edge blending) using 4 BARCO XLM projectors.

The video was fed through two Hippotizer HDs working in dual mode, in conjunction with Resolume Avenue and they were controlled by a GrandMA-Light console. Freek Wassenberg did all the videomapping using the Hippotizer’s mask effect to create individual masks and allowing him to program chases. With a very positive result he commented that “the production went smoothly and the system worked flawlessly for the three days of the festival”, making this another success story for Green Hippo’s Hippotizers.

This was the result:
