VideoMapper’s debut tour with Editors

All of us at Green Hippo are very proud to see our new critically acclaimed component VideoMapper hit the road with Editors on their ‘In this Light and on this Evening’ tour, promoting the latest album of the Birmingham quartet.

Longstanding friend Cate Carter, lighting designer for the tour, has previously worked on successful tours such as Duffy and Elbow.

Cate specified two HippoCritters for this tour and conceived one of the most creative uses of VideoMapper to date. Applying video artist Paul “Pablo” Beckett’s idea to take four bullet cameras into a CCTV quad split device and using preset effects that she has paletted to her Avolite  D4 console, Cate can choose any, all or a selection of the inputs. Subsequently, VideoMapper allows her to display these on any, all or a selection of her four Element Labs Stealth screens hung across the back of the stage.

“Having this amount of control and flexibility at my fingertips is amazing. Putting this kind of design together with standard AV kit would have probably quadrupled the budget and still wouldn’t have been as simple to use or half as effective”

The imaginative custom content was created by Pablo, based on the design and configuration of the Stealth screens and of course the songs themselves. Another important consideration for this particular tour was the variety of venues they would be playing at. From small to large venues, Carter’s design allows for different sized stages and audiences. “We needed a rig that we could interchange based on the venue. The design, right through from lighting to video, allows for this kind of flexibility without losing the overall feeling of the show”

Having completed the UK leg of the tour, Editors are currently trekking around Europe and will return for the UK festival season. Starting with the Isle of Wight on June 13th we will also see them grace the stages of Glastonbury and V. among others with a re-invented lighting design by Cate.
